It’s Time To Do Something About It

Considering recent tragedies, I’m finding the idea of sharing tech tools and teaching strategies a short-sighted attempt at helping others improve their practice before addressing the most basic and essential need of all our students: providing a safe learning environment. If this topic makes you uncomfortable, it should. But don’t worry, I’m not about to push a divisive political agenda.
It’s Our Responsibility
My Twitter feed consists of insights from some of the world’s best educators. These people whom I respect greatly have no shortage of great ideas or opinions when it comes to what is best for educating our students. But I have been shocked by the lack of outrage, questions, or anything more than a few obvious comments of what a tragic event this was, or an expression of thoughts and prayers. Maybe they are afraid of offending others. Perhaps they just don’t know what to say. I’m thrilled that their tweets typically avoid political debate, but providing a safe learning environment should not be political, and it certainly should take precedent over any instructional strategy or philosophy. It is our responsibility to advocate for the safety of our students above all else.
It is our responsibility to educate students. It is our elected officials responsibility to support us in doing so. I do not pretend to have the solution to this issue. I’m not interested in debating gun control or the status of our country’s moral fiber right now. I am interested in the safety of our students.
What Can You Do?
By all means, pray and think if that is your thing, but don’t forget to take action. Please don’t let this become yet another tragedy that we forget. Voice your concerns publicly. Most important: hold politicians accountable for their role in protecting our children. Contact your elected officials and simply ask a question: What are you going to do about this?
